David Brainerd, An Unlikely Missionary
Skinny, pale, and sickly, missionary David Brainerd has been described by more than one biographer as completely unqualified to work in a modern missions agency. Throughout the 29 years of his life, Brainerd suffered weakness and pain, yet this caused him to look upon death as a sweet relief as opposed to a frightening fate. Despite his physical frailty and tendency towards illness and despondency, Brainerd has come to be regarded as an incredible pioneer in missions. Although David Brainerd died at the young age of 29, his centuries-spanning influence for revival is positive proof God can and will use any vessel, no matter how fragile and frail, when that vessel is committed to winning souls for the Savior. His incredible story was published by the great Puritan preacher Jonathan Edwards. This David Brainerd biography has become a must read for Christians contemplating the mission service.
