A Commentary On “The Weekend Interview With David McCullough: Don’t Know Much About History”
George,
The federal government has no valid business in education. The States did not delegate such authority. Money does not ensure quality education.
You have erred in calling Bush a conservative.
Further, you still fail to blame the author of the legislation, the late-Senator Edward Kennedy for the quality of the legislation and its results. The bill, which I have not, read does not, I believe, require teaching and education to a test. It does however penalize schools for failure to demonstrate achievement by nationally normed grade-level standardized tests. The fact that many schools teach to the test is indicative of the low expectations that they have of their own methods and of the children.
There is a base of knowledge that is necessary for successful living. The possession of this knowledge base can be tested. Further, higher levels of thinking are tested too. So what is your beef really?
